Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer, Implant Electronics
Location: San Francisco, CA
Type: Full-Time (on-site)
Level: L4 — Senior Engineer
Coherence Neuro is a highly interdisciplinary neurotechnology company solving some of the most challenging biological and medical problems that remain unmet. Our goal is to develop technologies that significantly increase the quality and length of life for those with debilitating and deadly cancers in the brain and body. We are backed by the best global venture capital firms, and are scaling our team across multiple sites to bring our products to those who need it as quickly and safely as possible. If you're driven to push the boundaries of engineering and science and want to help build something that genuinely changes lives, we want to hear from you. We value diversity and encourage applicants from all backgrounds to join us in our mission. Learn about our team here!
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the neural recording and optical communication subsystems of SOMA, our fully implantable therapeutic brain stimulation system, at our San Francisco office.
This role takes the neural recording and optical data subsystems from bench prototype to implant-ready design. You will own the analog and optoelectronic signal chain end-to-end, working as a peer with the power & stimulation, implant compatibility and firmware leads. The ideal candidate is a hands-on mixed-signal engineer who is equally comfortable with a noise budget, a link budget and a thermal model, and who wants to see their circuits go into patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Own integration of the neural recording front end into the implant: electrode interface, input protection, referencing, and coexistence with high-amplitude therapeutic stimulation.
- Define and execute the pathway to qualify the recording electronics for chronic human implant use, working with quality, regulatory and reliability teams.
- Own the optical data subsystem: source and detector selection, placement, and the drive and receive electronics needed to close the link across the required misalignment range.
- Characterize optical link performance through tissue phantoms (bit-error rate and misalignment tolerance) and turn the results into design requirements.
- Model and verify the thermal behavior of the optical path and recording electronics inside the hermetic enclosure against tissue temperature limits, within the system power budget.
- Own the sensing and data-transmission physical layer (analog signal chain, modulation, bit-error performance).
- Produce requirements, analyses, schematics, verification protocols and reports suitable for the design history file under ISO 13485.
- Share system-level design and test load with the power & stimulation lead; mentor and guide board-level work by junior engineers.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; PhD with industry experience, or 6+ years of industry experience in analog/mixed-signal design.
- Track record designing low-noise, low-power analog front ends for biopotential or comparable microvolt-level sensing (noise, CMRR, input protection, artifact handling).
